The Resort

Island Pearl Villa, is located in tranquil Galleon Beach Resort. It is incredibly peaceful year round but within minutes has access to the bustling southern town of English Harbour, which is home to the Antigua Charter Yacht Show, the Antigua Superyacht Challenge, the RORC Caribbean 600, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and Antigua Sailing Week.

The resort is actually with the National Park  with the jewel in the crown, Nelson’s Dockyard, being a five minute water taxi ride away. Along with forts such as Fort Charlotte, which is a ten minute walk along the headland from the resort, Fort Berkley, the Admiral’s Inn and the Museum, history buffs will have hours of fun researching the fantastically resorted buildings.

365, one for each day of the year, is the mantra for Antigua. Within the resort we have Freemans’ Bay, which is an excellent beach for swimmers and bathers. Year round calm waters which are shallow on entry, although do look out for the rocks under foot. If you prefer a sandy entrance just walk along the shallows until you find one. If you prefer to go and discover the island, simply rent a car and stop at any beach that takes your fancy. Of course, if you just want to catch the perfect sunset, time your afternoons to be back on the gallery with a cold drink in hands and you will be assured of some stunning photographs to show your friends on your return from your vacation.

There is a beach bar in Galleon Beach Resort called Roxy’s open most days for lunch. The food is casual and tasty and you can dine on the deck or the beach. In English Harbour  and Falmouth, the adjacent village, you will find supermarkets, fruit stalls (in season) and an excellent choice of restaurants making dining and entertaining as well as shopping in some of the excellent gift and clothing shops very convenient. Of course Shirley Heights and the ubiquitous Sunday afternoon sunset party can be accessed via the trail or a five minute car journey. A must do, especially for first time visitors to Antigua.

The location of the resort is perfect to take advantage of some excellent hikes. Three separate trails lead up from Galleon Beach, one out from the headland up  to Shirley Heights, the other two from the entry round into Galleon Beach and again up to Shirley Heights. the trails are very well maintained by the TOT Club and include historical sites within them.

A gym, tennis courts, squash courts, yoga classes and massages  are all available in nearby English Harbour. For anyone who becomes unwell while on holiday there is an excellent emergency service called ABSAR, run by volunteers, but with fully trained paramedics who have excellent call out responses for real emergencies and the option to call in their clinic, which is located near to Antigua Yacht Club.  There is also a pharmacy located in the same building should you need supplies.

We are the yachting capital of the Caribbean and therefore learning to sail is definitely an option that should be exercised should you be interested.  A new Sailing Centre, the Yacht Club  or Ondeck offer everything from Dingy sailing to keelboat courses as well as professional certification.
